THE UNIVERSE IS MADE OF LANGUAGE BITS

Today, during our first meeting with each other on LinkedIn, the question came up: what is the connection between Chemistry and Language? Chemistry is the area of work for Mahmud, and Language for Ali. We’ll try to keep the answer short, but hopefully revealing:
Answer 1: Atoms and molecules are to Chemistry what sounds and words (sentences/text) are to language.
Answer 2: The periodic table is to Chemistry what the alphabet is to language.
Answer 3: Without the Periodic Table of Elements, there is no universe, and without language, there is no periodic table.

IT'S ALL ABOUT SELF-LEARNING

Despite the bashing, trashing, and thrashing we do of language teaching methods, learners continue to learn. Some may be better than others at comprehending, conversing, composing, analyzing, or translating, but learning of one kind or another still takes place. I do not wish to sound cynical, but it's not self-evident to me that those who were taught following Communicative_Language_Teaching guidelines, for example, are necessarily better than those who were reared in the Audiolingual regimen. It looks like much of what we learn boils down to what WE, learners, decide to achieve outside formal learning environments. In other words, independent, self-driven learning may hold the secret to our successes (or failures).
